The Nutritional Psychiatry Approach
What is Nutritional Psychiatry?
Nutritional psychiatry focuses on the relationship between nutrient deficiencies and mood disorders.
Nutrition plays a crucial role in the development, maintenance, and protection of our brain functions. For example, a diet high in processed and junk foods can be associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing depression and anxiety.
Additionally, a diet high in refined grains, sugars, fried foods, and alcohol can disrupt the conversion of amino acids into neurotransmitters, which are essential for regulating mood.
Despite taking psychiatric medications, some patients can still feel like they're spiraling out of control. For others, the unpleasant side effects of antidepressants or anti-anxiety meds interfere with their quality of life, leaving them feeling overmedicated or unable to cope.
Nutritional psychiatry offers a root cause, integrative, and functional approach, with nutrition as a primary cornerstone of mental health treatment.
What's more, nutritional interventions today may help lessen the effects of aging and stress on cognitive and mental health over time.

How important is nutrition to mental health?
Since our brain is composed of about 60% fat, food quality significantly impacts its function.
When we consume unhealthy fats, like trans fats, the brain may find it difficult to maintain optimal function and communication between cells.
Likewise, eating a high-sugar diet can lead to decreased magnesium levels and an increased risk of anxiety and depression.
Nutritional psychiatry examines the impact of gut health on nutrient absorption, which influences mental well being. Also, it assesses how lifestyle factors like exercise, stress reduction, and sleep can affect our emotional health.
Who Can Benefit from nutritional psychiatry?
Everyone can benefit from improving their gut health. But nutritional psychiatry treats intractible mental health conditions through a deep, holistic, root cause approach.

Nutritional Psychiatry is a good fit if you are:
- Struggling with a complex psychiatric history
- Dealing with psychiatric medications that have not been successful
- Exhausted by the conventional psychiatric medication model and not feeling better
- Ready to make lifestyle changes and move beyond psychotropic medications
- Understanding of the fact that the path to wellbeing is not a quick fix
Nutritional Psychiatry is not a good fit if you are:
- Looking for a quick fix
- Seeking antidepressants or psychotropic medication alternatives
- Actively using illicit substances
- Not interested in lifestyle changes that can improve well-being
- Looking for a one-size-fits-all solution and a passive role in your health.
- Only interested in in-office, in-person consultation

what are the alternatives to psychiatric medications?
In a world where medication often seems like the default solution to mental health challenges, medication tapering offers a refreshing alternative – one that prioritizes your well-being and autonomy.
While psychiatric medications might be beneficial for reducing symptoms, they also come with a host of potential side effects and risks, not to mention the possibility of dependence and long-term consequences.
"Psychiatric Medication Tapering isn't just about Reducing Medications — it's about Addressing the Root Causes of your Mental Health Challenges and Empowering Yourself to Embrace a Life of Balance, Resilience, and Vitality."
By carefully evaluating your medication regimen and gradually reducing or tapering off medications under the guidance of an experienced mental health professional, you can minimize risks and unlock new possibilities for healing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the age requirement to participate in the Anxiety & Depression Mood Mapping Intensive?
I welcome anyone between the ages of 18 and 64.
How will I get the lab test kits?
You will receive a welcome box that includes most of the test kits, while some will be drop-shipped to your home. Once you send your sample back to the lab, it will take 2 to 3 weeks to receive the results. When your results are ready, I will notify you so you can schedule an appointment through a link to my calendar. During this appointment, we will review your test results and discuss your personalized protocol.
Functional Lab Test Kits
The Root Cause Mapping Intensive includes two functional lab tests, which are hair-based assessments that provide insight into patterns related to mineral balance, gut health, food sensitivity, nutrient status, heavy metal exposure, stress patterns, and overall wellness. These insights can help identify potential biological contributors to symptoms such as anxiety, low mood, fatigue, or brain fog and guide personalized nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.
Hair-based testing is used as a functional wellness screening tool and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure medical or psychiatric conditions. Any recommendations discussed are meant to complement your existing healthcare and should be reviewed with your primary care provider or prescribing clinician.
What is the Psychiatric Medication Review Service?
Medications can play an important role in stabilizing mood, anxiety, or sleep in the short term. However, long-term use may lead to reduced effectiveness, unwanted side effects, worsening symptoms, or nutrient depletions that impact your overall health.
The Psychiatric Medication Review service is designed to give you clarity and insight into how your current medications may be influencing your energy, sleep, mood, digestion, and nutritional status. This review is not about managing or prescribing medications. Instead, it’s an opportunity to explore:
Possible drug-nutrient depletions (e.g., B vitamins, magnesium, zinc)
Side effects that may be contributing to fatigue, anxiety, or brain fog
Interactions between medications and supplements
How your current medications may relate to functional lab findings
Next-step referrals or collaborative care suggestions (if needed)
If you're feeling stuck, exhausted, or unsure whether your current meds are helping or hurting. This review provides a functional psychiatry lens to help you make more informed decisions with your care team.
Do You Prescribe Medications?
The Anxiety & Depression Root Cause Mapping Intensive does not include medication prescribing or medication management. Clients must maintain their own prescribing provider (such as a psychiatrist, primary care physician, or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, physician assistant) for all medication management related care.
My role is to help identify potential biological contributors to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, and brain fog using a nutritional psychiatry and functional health approach. During our work together, we may review how factors such as nutrient status, mineral balance, gut health, inflammation, or lifestyle patterns may be influencing your mental well-being.
If you are currently taking psychiatric medications, we may also discuss how certain medications can impact nutrient levels or metabolic patterns and identify supportive nutrition and lifestyle strategies. Any supplement or lifestyle recommendations are intended to complement your current care and should be discussed with your prescribing provider.
After the Intensive:
For clients who completed the Mood Mapping Intensive and began their foundational roadmap, we may offer short-term follow-up (3-6 months) support by invitation only. This may include monthly clinical visits, structured monitoring, and thoughtful medication adjustments when clinically appropriate.
Please be advised that Functional Mind-Body practice does not prescribe controlled substances.
Who is the Root Cause Mapping Intensive for?
This session is designed for adults who are experiencing persistent symptoms such as anxiety, low mood, fatigue, or brain fog and are curious about exploring potential biological contributors.
It may be a good fit if you:
• Feel stuck despite trying therapy, medication, or lifestyle changes
• Are open to exploring factors such as nutrient status, mineral balance, gut health, inflammation, and lifestyle patterns
• Want a structured, investigative approach to understanding your symptoms
• Are motivated to take an active role in your health and implement recommendations
The goal of this session is to help connect the dots and provide a clear roadmap for next steps.
Who may not be a good fit for this service?
This intensive may not be the best fit if you are seeking:
• Medication management or controlled substance prescribing
• Crisis mental health support or urgent psychiatric care
• Immediate changes to psychiatric medications
• Ongoing weekly counseling or therapy
• Support for active substance or alcohol misuse
If you are currently struggling with active substance use or alcohol dependence, it is important to work with a qualified addiction specialist or treatment program first. Once stability is established, a root-cause approach to supporting overall mental and physical health may become a helpful complement to your care.
My work is best suited for individuals who are stable and interested in exploring a nutritional psychiatry and root-cause perspective alongside their existing care team.
Will this session diagnose or treat my mental health condition?
No. The Root Cause Mapping Intensive is an educational and consultative service designed to help identify possible biological patterns that may be influencing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, or brain fog.
While we may review testing results, discuss lifestyle factors, and explore potential contributors such as nutrient imbalances or gut health patterns, this service does not provide psychiatric diagnosis, psychotherapy, or medical treatment.
Any recommendations discussed are intended to complement your existing care and should be reviewed with your prescribing provider or healthcare team.
How will we connect?
I will review your test results and protocol with you via Zoom. The length of your test review session depends on your selected plan. Throughout the program, you will receive weekly email check-ins from me through the Practice Better HIPPA-compliant platform. This regular communication is designed to answer your quick questions, monitor your progress, and provide additional guidance and adjustments as needed, ensuring you feel supported and confident in your health improvement process. You will be able to contact me Mon-Fri, and I'll respond within 24-48 hours.

Due to the nature of our services, we do not accept health insurance for payment.
What forms of payment do you accept?

Please check with your insurance carrier for more information on whether your HSA/FSA can be used for payment for a comprehensive mental wellness program.
